Verina Warren is a renowned textile artist working in the field of embroidery/painted textiles.

The work is mainly derived from landscape, capturing the essence of light and shade and all the minutia of nature, eg grasses, plant forms, patterns and shapes found in land sea and sky.

A series of vigorous sketches and drawings precede the design work, which aims to stylize and simplify the initial drawings.

This design is then transferred directly onto a silk background, using silk dyes and paints. At this stage the technique is kept very loose and free – using large brushes, dyes and paints are applied freely onto the silk to give areas of colour to the background.

More paint may be added to specific areas to intensify the colour. The dyes are then fixed and machine stitching worked into the background to give surface texture . More dye may be added at this stage, often over the machining to give added depth. This process is ongoing using both stitch and dye to build up a composite surface of texture. (Dyes are heat fixed throughout.) Not all the surface is covered, the spacial quality is equally important and balances areas of intense detail.

Hand embroidery may also be added at this stage, high–lighting small areas of interest, picking out details etc, – this is usually worked in silk to create points of light.

Once the stitched section is completed painted borders may be added to extend the parameters of the design sometimes encompassing narrow borders wrapped with silk threads.

The work is presented framed and glazed.
